Domain Names for Other Languages

Domain names for other languages

Domain names have a major role in the popularization of websites. They are the address by which websites are known to the users. This is thus the identity of the websites and is usually referred to as web addresses. Usually the domain names come in English language and hostnames are entered in English when searching for a URL. But have you ever thought of the idea of using other languages as domain names?

The use of local or regional languages as domain names is the main area of concern for many countries and organizations working on internet and domain names. This is mainly aimed at increasing the popularity of internet among local users. Such a system of using other languages as domain names and using Non-ASCII characters to represent host names are known as internationalized domain names.

Most of the countries have already started the use of some of their local languages as domain names. But when it comes to using so many languages with related scripts, using regional languages as domain names have to be done with ultimate care. There are chances of phishing and spoofing that might come as an after effect of using internationalized domain names in this manner. This is because, if a host name is created using a script and the same can be created in a visual manner using other scripts, the same host name can have different identities. Thus a spoofing of identity can come into existence which is a serious phenomenon as far as internet business is concerned.

So to use other languages as expired domain names, ultimate care has to be taken to counter the policies of spoofing and phishing. This can be done by blocking other identities of the same name by creating codes and allowing the original user only. The visual representation of the characters used to represent the domain names in local languages have to be created using powerful scientific formulas.

Using domain names in other languages has wide acceptance from internet lovers around the globe. The main reasons for such an acceptance are the easiness of interacting with internet in a local language. The chances of usage of internet in rural and remote areas are expected to increase with the usage of other languages for domain names. The most important aspect of using these local languages is the mismatch between the concept of having content of websites in one language and the host name in English. The usual procedure is the use of some regional languages as the contents of websites, but the same websites has a host name in English. This sounds to be quite odd. At the same time, if the content for example is Hindi and the domain name is in Devanagiri script, the concept sounds to be clearer.

But as any other area, this concept of using local languages as expired domains names have already received the criticism of opponents. They are claiming that such a usage of other languages in domain names can make it difficult to the owners to register their website identity each and every time. But now this has gained wide acceptance that registration in domain names of other languages are available at lower prices.
